A Step too VAR

In recent years, the introduction of VAR technology in football has sparked intense debates among fans, players, and pundits alike. While the intention behind VAR was to ensure fairness and accuracy in decision-making, many argue that it is slowly but surely killing the enjoyment of the beautiful game. As someone who was never in favour of VAR from the beginning, I can't help but express my concerns about how it has become the thin end of the wedge, gradually taking on an ever-increasing influence over the game and jeopardising the very essence of football.

When VAR was first introduced, the promise was clear - to eliminate clear and obvious errors in refereeing decisions. However, it seems that the technology has gone beyond its intended purpose, becoming a source of controversy and frustration. The initial scepticism I held toward VAR is proving justified, as its presence grows, so too does its impact on the flow and enjoyment of the game.

One of the most significant drawbacks of VAR is its impact on the flow of play. Football is known for its continuous, dynamic nature, with fans relishing the unpredictability of each match. VAR, however, interrupts this flow, subjecting every crucial decision to a prolonged review process. The joy of celebrating a goal is dampened as players and fans alike are forced to wait for the VAR verdict, unsure whether their moment of triumph will stand or be cruelly snatched away.

Football has always thrived on the human element, with referees making split-second decisions that contribute to the drama and excitement of the game. VAR, with its meticulous reviews and technology-driven precision, risks stripping away this crucial human aspect. The game loses some of its spontaneity and emotion.

What was initially presented as a tool to rectify clear mistakes has evolved into a system that scrutinises the minutest details of play. Offside decisions that hinge on the positioning of a player's toe or armpit have become the norm, leaving fans bewildered and frustrated. The thin end of the VAR wedge has widened, and its influence over the game has extended far beyond its original scope.

Endless tedious arguments about objectivity have replaced arguments over subjectivity, are we really any further forward?

It is high time for football's governing bodies to take a step back and reconsider the role of VAR in the game. While the pursuit of 100% fairness is commendable, if it comes at the expense of the sport's enjoyment is it really worth it? A balance must be struck, preserving the flow and spontaneity that makes football the most popular sport in the world.
